Luke is gone tonight to a Missions Conference. He told me this afternoon each church in the association had been asked to provide one dessert and that he was going to run to the grocery store and buy something to take. I applaud him for not wanting to worry me with it but, really. A store bought dessert when every other church would send some delectable, homemade goody?
Not on my watch.
So much for the whole ‘Preacher’s Wives shouldn’t worry about living up to expectations’ bit. I’m totally not letting my beloved church (or me, let’s not forget me!) be represented by a stale cake out of the deli case. This is one of those things that would have had the ladies clucking, “Oh look at that poor young preacher with the store bought cake. I bet his wife doesn’t cook.”
Don’t worry, baby. I got your back.
So I scrounged through the cabinets and refrigerator to discover I had the ingredients for Grape Salad. In my estimation, anything with cream cheese and pecans qualifies as a dessert. Anytime I make this or someone else brings it to church dinners, every bite is eaten and the bowl licked so it is definitely a safe standby in an emergency.
After I made the salad, I felt compelled to take a picture. My daughter said, “Mom, exactly why are you taking a picture of food?”
“Because doll baby, who knows the next time any will get cooked around here.”
Memories, people. They are made in the kitchen.
So without further ado….
Grape Salad
Needed:
4 Lbs. of Red or Green Seedless Grapes
1 8 oz. package Cream Cheese
1 8 oz. container Sour Cream
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 tsp Vanilla Extract
4 oz. Chopped Pecans
2 Tbsp. Brown Sugar
Directions:
Wash and dry grapes. In a large bowl, mix together the cream chese, sour cream, sugar and vanilla. Add grapes and mix until evenly incorporated. Sprinkle with the brown sugar and pecans, mix again and refrigerate until serving.
UPDATE:
Luke just called and said my dessert was DUSTED..(Southern talk for not a bite left..) So our reputation is safe.
For now.

I LOVE that dessert! I also loved your cartoon. I completely understand as many Saturday nights my husband just “happens” to mention that we are having a covered dish after church and he “forgot” to tell me!
Being a Pastor’s wife is challenging, but rewarding!

Please tell me this has nothing to do with your gut-busting pedicure post earlier today. You’re not going to soak your toes in that desert, are you? Or hear back from the ladies about a toenail hidden in the dressing?!? OY!

Mmmm sounds good! Can’t wait to taste this delectable fare…and I’m proud of your honoring your hubby this way. I know it made him proud. Not pleasing folks, no. But your man? Oh yeah!
Thanks for your GOOD words to me. Mileage, indeed! We are steeping in it right now :)

YUM! I love that stuff. I made a ‘healthy version’ of it last night. I didn’t have pecans, just walnuts. I mixed lowfat cream cheese and Splenda sweetened vanilla yogurt… then added the grapes and sprinkled it w/ the nuts. It was yummy and didn’t make me feel as guilty! And yes the version you blogged is better… but you can’t eat that every night for dessert! Well… I guess you could…. :) Glad it was a hit!
Loved the cartoon too!!

I understand so much of this…except HE’S really the cook in my house. Men don’t get it. Your salad looks wonderful. I might try that during the holidays. It’d be refreshing when we have warm days here.
Hugs,
Susan

I have never in my life heard of that and I consider myself a southerner, but dang girl…I think even I (who doesn’t cook unless absolutely necessary) could make that!
Thanks for the great recipe and for pulling a rabbit out of your hat at the last minute!

Lisa, I lived for eight years in the South (note the capital S), and I remember the competitive spirit surrounding those dinners-on-the-ground events after church. Never once did I see a Grape Salad, though. This sounds delicious!

Oh girl that looks good! And I was cracking up at the cartoon. You poor thing! I love sweets so much that I would’ve been fine with the store-bought kind!
Love you!

Okay, yesterday was our open house at the new church building, followed by a potluck for side dishes. Guess what I brought?
Thank you so much for this recipe – it was “dusted”! ;)
